The Redland SMART engine offers a massively scalable, fully automated business intelligence
solution. By concentrating on defining business rules and relationships Redland SMART is
able to create standard code directly after specification. Splitting the business requirements from the
technical implementation allows rapid delivery of data in full control of the business. This approach allows
the technical requirements to be defined and maintained in isolation from complex business requirements.
Metadata is often used to assist with development of business rules. Redland SMART goes
further by defining both business rules and technical code as metadata. A tiny core uses
technical metadata to define a process. This process is then applied to business metadata to transform data
into a consistent and scalable form. This approach to automating business intelligence has many benefits:

Redland SMART uses primitive constructs allowing it to be easily migrated across
platforms. The native transformation language is SQL and can run on SQL-Server, Oracle or any database
platform that supports ANSI SQL. SQL means that data is transformed close to source resulting in maximum
performance. Metadata constructed SQL means that changes are delivered across the system making it very
flexible. Reporting can be performed using any database reporting tool from Excel and Crystal Reports to
Cubes. This platform independence allows for lower implementation and migration costs.
